Aim and Scope
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Computer Simulation represents a way to exploit a computational model, either 
to evaluate designs, plans, models without actually bringing them into 
existence 
in the real world or context of application, or to evaluate theories and models 
of complex systems by envisioning the effects of the modelling choices, with 
the 
aim of gaining insight into their functioning, works, processes and mechanisms.

Results, models and techniques developed in the context of Artificial 
Intelligence (AI) have often been applied in the context of simulation, from 
the 
adoption of agent-based approaches to the modelling of complex systems to the 
employment of learning techniques for simulation model design, calibration and 
optimization. On the other hand, simulation has also often been employed by AI 
for tasks that vary from the systematic testing of models, instruments and 
theories, to the realization of what-if scenarios supporting specific forms of 
reasoning techniques.

The aim of this first edition of the AISSAI Workshop is to bring together 
competencies, experiences, reflections on the founding assumptions and best 
practices related to the employment of AI techniques for simulation and for the 
exploitation of simulation techniques in the context of AI research. The 
workshop is meant as a forum for researchers active or interested in the 
relationships between AI and simulation, supporting the discussion of results, 
relevant research advances and methodological reflections, fostering thus 
interdisciplinary discussion and cross fertilization of the involved 
disciplines 
and application areas.

Topics of Interest

We invite papers on all aspects relating to AI techniques in simulation and 
simulation techniques for AI research and applications, with particular 
attention to interdisciplinary experiences. Both reports on practical results 
and recent research contributions will be considered. Topics of interest 
include, but are not limited to, the following:

Foundations:
* epistemological background of simulation
* models of humans using simulation in daily reasoning
* general model life cycle issue
* empirical AI: the role of simulation in testing AI instruments

AI for Simulation:
* the intelligent model/simulation optimization techniques (a wider view to 
 optimization-based calibration e.g. using a GA...)
* automated consistency checking using constraint satisfaction techniques, etc
* learning techniques for simulation model design and optimization
* role playing or other games as intelligent elicitation of model contents
* intelligent user interfaces to modelling and models
* intelligent visualization of simulation dynamics
* intelligent data and text analysis in the context of modelling and simulation
* qualitative simulation and qualitative model representation/description 
 (naive physics, naive geography...)
* logic-based modelling techniques
* intelligent/agent-based simulation infrastructure
* agent-based modelling and simulation
* embedding detailed cognitive models of humans

Simulation for AI:
* simulation-based testbeds and contests for AI
* best practices for developing simulation-based testbeds for AI instruments 
 and theories
* simulation in cognitive models (for evaluating action outcomes...)
* simulation as problem solving/decision making

Applications and Tools:
* AI and combined multi-model simulation
* AI and simulation in games and entertainment
* Virtual characters
* Intelligent tools for simulation and simulation-based tools for AI (and 
 Simulation for AI)
* Case studies and applications in domains such as: simulation of human and 
 social dynamics, military applications, industrial engineering, 
 manufacturing, supply chain management, swarm intelligence, ethological/
 ecological/biological modelling, artificial life, training and tutoring, etc.

Paper Submission and Publication
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The AISSAI Workshop welcomes both full technical as well as short position 
papers. Authors must follow the ECAI style guidelines 
(http://ecai2010.appia.pt/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=26&Itemid=45)
 
in the preparation of their contributions. Full papers must not exceed 8 pages, 
whereas short papers must not exceed 4 pages in length.

Contributions will be reviewed at least by two members of the International 
Programme Committee on the basis of technical quality, relevance, significance, 
and clarity, and those selected for presentation will be included in the 
Workshop local proceedings. Detailed Instructions on the submission process are

A Special Issue of a prominent International Journal in the field is also being 
considered, which will include a selected number of papers presented at the 
Workshop, whose authors will be invited to extend and improve according to the 
comments and suggestions gathered during the meeting.
