My current setup (made today :-) is:)
speechd running as systemservice with self created initskript in gentoo
style.
Sd reconfigured:
1. disable autospawn
2. audio libao
3. unix_socket
4. socketfile /var/run/speech-dispatcher/speechd.sock
5. added user speech-dispatcher (like in debian).
6. Added that user to group audio.
7. Inserted the speechd_address in /etc/profile.
Now I can tell you it works as expected for console and gnome.
