With some limited reading and knowledge on the subject I understand that alsa
supports hardware mixing, what I read implied that only certain hardware will
support this not all. So not a solution for a Live CD. Does your hardware even
support mixing Tony?
Please correct me if I am wrong, I am also intrested to squeeze as much
performance out of my system for my own project.

PS My SAPI speech server/commandline client is now readyto be intergrated and
tested for performance with SD. Will keep you all posted on the results.
