Right, so I find the consensus so far is to put some work into this activitystreams-adaptation. Even though it could break a couple of the plugins (given that many are using legacy notice hand), though these would be rather easy to rescue if necessary.
If anyone thinks AS is outdated, I would argue that restructuring the code to better object orientation in general will help any kind of future data format to be implemented and extended in the source.
