good Linux terminal emulator for screen?

Can anyone recommend a terminal emulator for Linux which

a) provides 256 colors

b) can be configured not to scroll when I drag select some text and head "north" of the top of the terminal emulator?

I have tried the st terminal emulator, but would prefer something more likely to be found pre-packaged.
