Regarding the page statistics, it looks like SourceForge is
providing a logotype image on each page as a counter. The
image is returned by CGI script (or similar) that also
increases a project page counter.
A similar, but simpler, method can be used with Savannah.
You'll need a personal web site with good statistics and
they you simply include an image from that site on each
page. I.e. add an img tag with
src="http://yoursite/image.jpeg" in each HTML file.
I've used this technique with my own projects here
(Grammatica and Mibble) with good results. With the referrer
URLs you even get exact counts per web page.
Note: This does not solve the download statistics issue.
AFAIK that would require processing the access logs.

I also just wanted to insert a "me too".
My point of view is that the most important (for me) is a
'files download' statistics. I think it is a really good way
to estimate the number of 'users' of a project and so to
motivate the hackers team.
Others statistics (for HTML site visits) can be falsed:
visitors can have been redirected to my page because of a
wrong web search engine pattern.
But do not misunderstand: even without statistics, Savannah
is great.

I also just wanted to insert a "me too".
I think it the only thing missing on this wonderfully
savannah project is statistic.
By statistic i mean statistic by individual project and by
files.
But please make it easy to read!
I don't thing we need that much information as webalizer
provide. The primary use for me would be numbers of visits
and when. them numbers of download files by filenames.
Keep it up!!!
You are doing a great job.

Just wanted to insert a "me too". I personally think the
most pressing need is to get some kind of download
statistics (as aurelus mentioned). Such stats could be
public, and it would be really nice if it was broken down
into each individual file.
Webstats would also be nice, but for me that is secondary. I
agree with bescoto, that setting up Webalizer or similar
would probably be easiest. My ISP has crontabbed analog to
run twice a week on the last 6 months of logs and it works
very well. Such detailed statistics should only be available
to the project admin, though, it seems to me.

For me email would not be the most convenient way to receive
the logs (scp or http would be nicer) but others may have
different preferences.
Is it easier to use email to send the logs? I guess you'd
have to set up some kind of form to let people
enable/disable the feature, and have an elementary database
pairing projects with email addresses (unless you want to
integrate this into the mailing list software somehow).
It probably would be easy just to zip the logs (assuming
they're already sorted by project) and make them available
for download via http, in the same way the cvs tarballs are.
Some people may have privacy objections to this though.
I'm probably missing something, never having run a site
remotely like this, but it seems webalizer or whatever
wouldn't be too hard to set up either on a project by
project basis.

This idea is interesting. Bescoto, what do you think?

Access to logs would be very nice.
Maybe a cronjob to mail the logs from project pages once per
week / month?

I know the problem ;-). Thanks.

I'm currently busy with my scholar studies and cannot really
improve savannah but I promise to work on it as soon as I
have more free time.

Hi
I just wanted to say that I fully agree with all previous
posts ;-). (I was looking for such statistics myself.) I
would personally be most interested in download statistics
(downloads of releases from the filelist).

I think limited access log files is the first thing to do,
since it seems it would be relatively easy, and then people
can compile whatever statistics they want.
But parsed logs would be good also if you have the time. I
was using awstats, but webalizer looks at least as good. To
use logs you basically need to parse them anyway, and most
people will never want anything more than webalizer, so
setting that up once would be more efficient than everyone
setting up webalizer or whatever on their own computer.
If you get all of this working, then you could try to
compile some "top 10" lists, like most visited software
projects, etc. But Freshmeat already keeps some of this
information, so I think this is less important.
A complicating factor is that some of the statistics will be
from the cvs-managed homepages (like www.nongnu.org/project)
and some will be from the savannah project pages. Ideally
the stats from both of these would be available (and
integrated if you parse the logs for us). But if that is
hard, it would still be very useful to have file download
(savannah/download/project) and web page statistics.

I agree with you.
Please, give me details about what you want:
- direct access to the logs (in which case, access limited
to projects members) related to the project
- results of parsed logs by a program (which one, webalizer ?)

Thanks, I think it is a good idea. A main issue in free
software production is author motivation, and seeing people
downloading your stuff (or even competing with other
projects) can be a good motivator.

Il think I'll set up something like this soon.
