A package was submitted to savannah.gnu.org
This mail was sent to address@hidden, address@hidden
Martin Quinson <address@hidden> described the package as follows:
License: gpl
Other License:
Package: Po for anything
System name: po4a
Type: 2
Description:
The goal of the po4a (po for anything) project is to ease the work of free
software translators. For now, their work is quite easy for program messages
(thanks to po files and gettext), but nothing similar exist for documentation.
The goal of the project is to develop small program and scripts to extract the
text which should be translated from where it is, put it in po files, and then,
when the translators are done, reinject their work in the structure of the
document.
Using po files make it easy to track changes in the original document, without
actually having to retranslate anything.
The main contributors of po4a are myself and Denis Barbier, both coordinator of
the Debian localization team for french. I\'m also coordinator of the french
team in the TP project.
For now, the scripts to convert po files from and to DebianDoc SGML
documentation are quite usable, and we are working on scripts to convert from
and to RFC822 text files (like the debconf templates are), pod (Perl
documentation), wml (web meta language), texinfo and several others.
Until now, we used to devellop these scripts somehow alone, and put them on our
respective web pages. We would like to ease our logistics problem.
The project is somehow related to gettext (of course), poxml (a tool developped
by KDE to do what we want for LinuxDoc XML files), and intltools (a tool
develloped by the Gnome guys to do that for .desktop files, and glade
interfaces).
You may want to check this URL:

Other Software Required:
For now, most of the scripts are done in Perl, and we of course rely on gettext
to handle the po files (from the translator point of view).
Other Comments:
Licence: GPL for executable, LGPL for library (if any).
