Since rdiff-backup stores the most recent copy directly as files, you're at best going to lose some information about the original files (e.g. ownership, permissions, etc).
The rdiff-backup-data/metadata* files contain the ownership, permissions, size, modification time, as well as a sha1 digest of the file. I'm not backing up non-regular files (such as device files) but I bet information is stored for them as well.
