hello!
i read the thread at:
http://rdiff-backup.solutionsfirst.com.au/index.php/DetectMoves
and i also think that it would be very useful, if there would be a feature for
detecting if files are being moved.
think of the following:
you are backing up a 500GB Server over a line with small bandwidth (that`s why
we use rdiff-backup ;) ) to a backup-machine with "just enough" diskspace.
typical daily backup maybe 5GB for all the stuff users are storing/changing in
their homedirs.
now there is a user who has 50GB directory-tree and decides "oh - ok - letŽs
rename that dir".
bang! :(
this will kill your bandwith and also kill your diskspace - and skip your daily
backup because you cannot transfer that data inside the backup window
(typically 24hrs) - and that just because it is transferring and storing 50 GB
of data we already have....
ok, this is quite extreme example, but there maybe many others some others -
and - anyway, rdiff-backup is storing redundant data into the backup repository.
i like the idea of an inode-tracking approach, because data isn`t typically
moved between partitions, but moving data inside a partition or renaming a
directory happens quite easily (and even accidentally with windows explorer -
this just coming to my mind while writing these lines - think of a samba-share
exporting large project directories, used by tens or hundreds of users - now a
user accidentally moves a directory tree and he or some other person detects
that errror on the next day - this means rdiff-backup is storing redunant data
even two times)
regards
roland
