[rdiff-backup-users] restoration failure on osx client

From: Hunter Matthews
Subject: [rdiff-backup-users] restoration failure on osx client
Date: Tue, 17 May 2005 15:52:17 -0400

Client is osx 10.3.8, with rdiff-backup 0.13.6
Server is linux (rhel3) with a jfs backup area and rdiff-backup 0.13.4.

Here is the filesystem originally backed up:
client-mac:/tmp root# ls -l /Users/xx19/Desktop/Cecile/recettes/
total 776
-rwxr-x--- 1 xx19 xx19 6148 19 Apr 17:17 .DS_Store
-rw-r----- 1 xx19 xx19 19968 19 Apr 17:17 Amuses-gueules.doc
-rw-r----- 1 xx19 xx19 21504 19 Apr 17:17 Bu??che de Noel.doc
-rw-r----- 1 xx19 xx19 19968 19 Apr 17:17 Bu??ches.doc
-rw-r----- 1 xx19 xx19 20992 19 Apr 17:17 Cakes sale??s.doc
-rw-r----- 1 xx19 xx19 299008 19 Apr 17:17 Jamie_Oliver_Cook_Book.doc
pryerlabmac:/tmp root#

The ?? in the listing are various french letters with ` or ' or ^ over
them.

Here is the directory on the backup server
address@hidden recettes]# ls -l
total 380
-rw-r----- 1 xx19 xx19 19968 Apr 19 17:17 Amuses-gueules.doc
-rw-r----- 1 xx19 xx19 21504 Apr 19 17:17 Bu??che de Noel.doc
-rw-r----- 1 xx19 xx19 19968 Apr 19 17:17 Bu??ches.doc
-rw-r----- 1 xx19 xx19 20992 Apr 19 17:17 Cakes sale??s.doc
-rw-r----- 1 xx19 xx19 299008 Apr 19 17:17
Jamie_Oliver_Cook_Book.doc

md5sum's of these files compare exactly. For the moment, forget about
any potential resource forks.

Here's a test restore run for just this directory.
address@hidden bin]# rdiff-backup -r now
/backups/clients/client-mac/Users/xx19/Desktop/Cecile/recettes
client-mac::/tmp/restores/

I end up with files in /tmp/restore that appear to have the correct
name, but are empty.

Suggestions? Could this be a bug in 0.13.4 on the server side (its
production server for other linux systems, I don't upgrade it lightly)
