I'm using rdiff backup to backup my home directory from an OpenBSD system running on an x86 to an OpenBSD system running on a 64 bit spark machine. I'm using OpenBSD 3.3 on both systems. The initial backup works fine but when I run rdiff-backup again I get a metadata file not found warning followed by an IO error.

I get the same results on versions 0.12.6 and 0.13.3.

Search for my name in the mailing lists, I've been through trials and tribulations trying to get my faithful old Ultra 5 to backup my x86 machines all running OpenBSD. Its not going to work - Python is unfortunately horribly broken on sparc64, though you almost have a chance if you install gcc-3 from ports, recompile python with that, and go from there. Though, you're still doomed in my experience.

There is hope that python-2.3 isn't horribly broken, but I've given up on this scheme and adopted a different approach. Now I use rdiff-backup on OpenBSD x86, and rsync the repository to my ultra5. (I use the Ultra5 for the off-site part of my backup scheme). Backups of backups, what fun!
