~ does not work. Do I have to be in some special mode?

Forward to what? The multi-pane view?

That part of the story was actually not a joke, it's implemented and
usable. Just press ~ in ranger to switch between views.

It's still under development, e.g. the colorscheme shows no indication
which column is the active one. Give it a try nonetheless :)

Yes, and in the long run I target a merge with the MC project and a

In seriousness, april fools is over, reverted to the old GUI. Soon
there will be a run-time switch to change the mode on the fly, though.

Looks promising! Is the plan to have the usual MC shell prompt as INSERT
mode and the usual keybindings as COMMAND mode?

What about built-in commands? Are we going to have a different mode for
that?

Hey there, ranger users.

I think the time has come to admit that while ranger's the Miller
Column
approach to file browsing may have been an interesting experiment, the
one and only, the true way to browse your files is demonstrated by
Midnight Commander. The dual pane view.

So we have decided to ditch the old GUI and develop a multiple pane
view
for ranger!

Just upgrade the ranger-git package and you will experience the rush
and
intensity that, uhm, the rest of the world has since 1986 already!

How to navigate the panes:

1. Create a new tab with Ctrl+n to create a new pane. (Yes, tabs are
now
    the same as panes!)
2. Tab between them with <TAB>
