Apparently you are using scope.sh for previews.  Have you tried
executing scope.sh directly?  Maybe there's an error message.  The
command would be:

~/.config/ranger/scope.sh /etc/fstab 80 24
echo $?  # this prints the exit code

What happens?  What's the exit code?
