I just posted a patch to reimplement the file tree walk in 
backup-files.c using the dirent functions. Following are
ports of Joe's portability patches to backup-files.c,
integrating my rewrite of the configury, broken into small
digestable pieces.

     ports to AIX, HPUX, Tru64 and Solaris to follow...
