Yes, this is how memory_region_name() works:

const char *memory_region_name(const MemoryRegion *mr)
{
    if (!mr->name) {
        ((MemoryRegion *)mr)->name =
            g_strdup(object_get_canonical_path_component(OBJECT(mr)));
    }
    return mr->name;
}
