The only thing that spontaneously comes to my mind is a bug in the
compression code that’s fixed in 4.1.1 and will be in 4.2.0 (commit
b6c246942b14d3).
OTOH that bug was only in 4.1.0, not 4.0.0. (git-describe tells me it
was introduced in 4.0.0-578.)
So, hm, I’d first suggest trying again with 4.1.1, and hope that works.
If it doesn’t, well, we’ll have to see.
