It looks like this is a bug which will need to be fixed.

In the mean time, you can work around it:   Instead of entering new
variables from the Variable View, switch to the Data View.  From here
you can enter new variables at any position, by selecting the desired
column, then using either a) Edit->InsertVariable or b) right mouse click,
and choose InsertVariable from the popup menu.
