This is indeed somewhat strange but,

Protux asks ALSA if the sample rate and bitdepth are supported, and if not, it 
outputs the error ALSA returned.
So it seems that your card supports 48kHz and 16 bits, but no 44.1kHz and 16 
bits.
Normally, the sound applications deals with this by converting to the 
supported rate/bitdepth but Protux is still not able to do this.

But ALSA can do it for us via the "plughw" device which can be set via the 
"Global Properties" windows. ( < G P > ) and select the "Use plughw 
controller"

That should solve the problem.
