it already used autoconf/automake, but it has been rewritten in the 0.17 
serie... so for some people 0.16 works better, for other it is 0.17...

yes, try that.
Otherwise try current cvs version... several thing have been fixed regarding 
autoconf/automake. Current cvs doesn't require the make -f 
admin/Makefile.common step anymore.
