Is it reproducible? Reproducible when running on a plain Pingus source tree without the Gentoo stuff around it?

Have you made sure that the drive is ok? Might be some bad blocks that are causing things to slow down, 'dmesg' might have some error messages in that case.

You could also try a wrap 'strace' around that find to see if anything weird is going on.
