Please allow me to throw out an idea.

I am aware of the file-manager geocities style stuff being a little tricky
(i.e. I couldn't get it to work).

So let me throw a few ideas out there for the savage attention of all:

-could this be assimilated as an optional module?  it is incredibly simple
but it uses PERL which should not be an issue for the *nix users.
