problem is I can send from phpgw, I just can't see what I've sent in phpgw (I can see it in, say, SquirrelMail), it's more of an incoming problem,
 in that I just don't see that there is an attachment there...

Outgoing email attachment restrictions are usually handled by php.ini .. look
for file size limitations (I forget the actual variable names).
It sounds like something in there is the problem
Please post a note in the email admin section once you get this working in
order to help others (http://wiki.phpgroupware.org)
