Sounds great .. I was having a different but related problem.

When a user got his email from a different pop client and then went into phpgw
configured as an imap client, any new mail he recieved would show up with the
subject and dates of one of the old emails (removed by the other pop client)

This approach of flushing the cache on login should fix that problem too
