[Phpgroupware-users] CVS update

To begin with, I've checked obvious places like cvshome.org and user groups
before posting this obviously simple question. Let me explain:

I recently installed phpgroupware via my FreeBSD 4.8 ports collection.
Everything is working fine except for an occassional error that I suspect is
a misconfigured app or two. I'd like to use CVS (installed) to keep my phpwg
and apps up to date. I've attempted to CVS update via 'cvs update -dP' when
I'm in the phpgroupware root directory (/usr/local/www/data/phpgroupware)
though I get the 'No CVSROOT specified!' error. So I go about setting the
$CVSROOT via 'setenv CVSROOT ~/cvsroot' then I 'cvs init'. Next attempt at
updating seems to work although the directory phpgw remains unchanged. I
have root access to my server.

Questions:
1. Does CVS need a main repository for ALL of my installed applications (in
addition to phpgroupware), like /root/CVS?
2. Why do I have to 'setenv CVSROOT' eveytime I need to CVS an app?
3. Is the 'setenv CVSROOT' different per user? ("duh")
4. Is there clearly written CVS documentation for the programming dummie?
5. Since I installed phpgroupware via FreeBSD ports is CVS the only (best)
way to get frequent updates?

Thanks for your answers and time :)
