This is correct. It seems that people keep misunderstanding what it is to be an Exchange replacement. An Exchange replacement will need to use the MAPI protocol or a replacement mapi.dll

It will then need to support email, todo/tasks, notes, and calendar. All of these need to be done so that managerA can give receptionistB rights to any of these elements. The calendar needs to handle free/busy times and meeting requests.

A simple data store where you can get to your email and maybe store todos and calendar information is *NOT* a replacement for Exchange. What this really ends up being is nothing more than a remote PST file, which can more easily be supported by setting up a file share where the PST files can be located.

i think you might want to look at this as an option, InsightConnector at
www.bynari.net it let you use an imapd located on a linux box as an
exchange replacement. i did alitle testing on it a while back and it seems
to work well. if you looking for an exchange replacement this is the best
i have found. hope this helps

yet :) it certain could be done, but with the closed nature of Exchange it will

be

quite difficult to make a fully compatable server.
