I do not use ldap for contacts or auth, but i here is what i understand
of the current situation.

This is available ... you just select store contacts in ldap in setup.

Correct, you can only use ldap for either contacts or auth ... but not both.

This has been done ... and afaik it works pretty well for those sites.
