a correct hosts file will have at least lines as follows:

127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain
10.1.0.1 machine machine.domain.com

If you don't have the 127.0.0.1 line all sorts of odd things will happen on the
system.  You can have as many lines as you want, and as many names for each IP 
as
you want.
