For email, you simply add the proper mail server info during setup.  If your
phpGroupWare usename and password don't match your mail server's then you can
using the Custom settings in email preferences for each user.

If you are getting error please tell us the error, which version of phpgw and
where you got it (rpm, deb, tar.gz, etc.) and what distro you are running.
There are issues with some setups, and there are work arounds for most all
issues I know of.
