Summary:  various PHP breakages (sid)

Original Submission:  For various parts of the core suite, the code breaks with
recent PHP versions, and more so with their recommended
settings (ie, register_globals = Off and safe_mode = On).

Our debian packages are a little dated.  The issue with register_globals = off 
is well known to us.  It will be fixed in the next major release, as there is a 
lot of work involved in fixing this problem.  

Also I was not aware that safe_mode = on is now a default setting for php.

Please also report this problem on the debian bug tracker.
