There is a tutorial and a reference doc in the etemplate dir after you install
it

Also, there are a couple of people usually on irc that could help

use of etemplate is not endorsed by many of the leading devs .. they feel that
there are better ways to code and that the use of etemplate carries a
performance hit that is unacceptable in larger deployments .. they usually
suggest copying the notes app since it is a fairly easy one to understand and
modifying it to suit

however, I feel there is not an easier way for a beginner to start programming
and when pressed, everyone who's tried the database section (used to create
the files for creating and modifying your app's db tables) of etemplates finds
no fault with it

the lead devs are careful to point out that apps based on etemplate may not
work with future versions of phpgw .. that may also affect the future of
infolog (in it's current form) which is based on etemplates
