have more options for long range radios ?

A separate RF amplifier between your modem and antenna might also be an option. Here in Australia, legal limits on ISM class licences are on EIRP, not  actual TX power. So, you can reach the limit with narrower beamwidth or increasing power.

Directional antenna in the plane would be more complicated than an omnidirectional antenna plus amp. Perhaps not so bad on the ground.

However, if you accidentally take an excursion above the legal EIRP limit, you might be more likely to cause someone else a problem with high TX power on omnis, than with directional antennas. Just a thought.

i will fly more than 50km away.

Wow, take care. At "close to theoretical maximum range", reception is very is susceptible to interference.

Do you have access to UHF spectrum?
