Orientation is also very important with that GS407 unit. I was not getting a lock with it outdoors in clear skies when I had it 90 degrees off (the helical sensor was horizontal). You need to have the helical sensor (with the amplifier chip) pointed directly at the sky. I thought orientation didn't matter with the helical antenna, but it certainly does.

Just to be safe i ordered one of the Paparazzi designed GPS units from David as it looks to me that quality control is lacking those days when it comes to mass produced units.
