My advice is to completely forget about making Paparazzi work in an 
other than Linux
environment.
I know that this doesn't answer your question but i have tried running 
Ubuntu in a virtual machine before
and the only thing i got in return was more problems.
Make a Linux partition or if you dont' know how to do it find someone 
who can
and install Ubuntu.
I think it is possible to install Ubuntu on a usb drive also.
