We also fly a 40 size trainer with a .55 glo engine. With the sensor mounted
on a pylon on the 'windscreen', 5cm above the engine, it failed to work,; to
much IR signature from the engine and wanted to pitch up....

I have now mounted below the fus, below CofG more or less, and it works
perfectly. We fly in the desert mostly here in Namibia, so have spring steel
landing gear with about 70mm wheelbase width and 80mm fat foam wheels to
land and takeoff on sand/gravel. Works very well, BUT... have destroyed 2
sensor already from stones flung up by the prop hitting the IR window.
Moving the sensor rearwards would help a little, since the stones velocity
may reduce a little by then, but only a little.. Not the best solution
under, unfortunately. We are a 60 size trainer now, with 75 engine, and I
have fitted my sensors ( I made my own sensors, each separate,ie, one for Z
and one each for pitch and roll) as follows - Pitch at left wing tip, roll
on top of fus, just rear of wing trailing edge, Z facing up/down, thru fus,
just rear of roll sensor. This works great, no oil on windows, no stones, no
fuss!

Have fun

Joe

Also have had success with this configuration. The only problem I see
is for belly-landers, which should be obvious.

To secure them, I generally take a piece of shrink-wrap just big enough
to wrap around the two sides without the picoblade connector, making
sure to not obstruct the thermopile's window. Then I use hot glue
between the shrink-wrap and the (foam) airframe. Works really well.
