Thanks Chris! It is infact D2 - though I did receive another report that it is only needed for software reset of the GPS. When would this take place? I would assume that this would mostly happen when triggered by a user with remote telemetry, or am I incorrect?

If it is D1 you can do with out it as this diode is used for charging the capacitor which means that you will only notice  a slower  3d fix acquisition.
If it is D2 you need to replace it as it is used for resetting the GPS.
In any case you can solder a 1N5819 (full size) Schottky diode with a little effort if you don't have a similar spare diode.
