I went with an external regulator, works beautifully. I ended up desoldering the board though, as something continued to smoke until I did, despite sending Vin to Vout on the board. Thanks!

By the way, you can solder a single wire on the regulator board to disable it, you do not have to de-solder it and risk damaging the board. Have a look at the datasheet. I also recommend using an external BEC instead of replacing the regulator.

Hi Adrian.
The JP1 is the there to supply power from the autopilot to the receiver as the ppm board takes it's power from the autopilot any way.
If you had connected a battery also to the receiver that is bad for the health of the 5v regulator.
The autopilot's dc input is not coming from the receiver, the receiver
take power from the autopilot's 5v when the JP1 is installed, otherwise
you can power the receiver with a separate battery or bec if the JP1 jumper is removed.
You can use any switching bec like the Castle creations 10A bec or similar with a little work.
In any case do not use the internal 5v regulator for driving servos.
