EUROPEAN MICRO AIR VEHICLE CONFERENCE AND COMPETITION 2009 (EMAV 2009)

http://www.emav2009.org/

Micro Air Vehicles (MAVs) are small flying robotic systems. With their light weight and small size, they form ideal research platforms for a myriad of research fields. The development of MAVs requires knowledge from areas such as electronics, mechanics, aerodynamics, navigation and control, and many more. Thanks to the scientific progress and availability of open-source control systems, research on MAVs can now also focus on the more cognitive aspects of autonomous flight.

The European Micro Aerial Vehicle conference (EMAV) is one of the leading conferences on the state of the art of MAV-research. The EMAV 2009 will be organised in Delft, the Netherlands. The objective of the conference is to provide an effective and established forum for discussion and dissemination of original and recent advances in MAV technology. The conference program will consist of a theoretical part and a flight competition.

COMPETITION:

The EMAV 2009 has two outdoor and two indoor competitions. The outdoor competitions are held at the military terrain of 't Harde, the Netherlands. In the outdoor endurance competition, teams have to build small MAVs (< 50 cm wing span) that fly as long as possible. In the outdoor autonomy competition, teams have to complete various tasks in a limited time, including: searching for a hidden truck, flying through arches, hitting balloons, performing a paintball drop, etc. Goal is to stimulate higher levels of autonomy and the use of MAV swarms. The indoor autonomy mission is an extensive mission in which an MAV has to enter a small house and perform recognition tasks, pick up an object, fly out of the building, etc. The indoor dynamics mission is especially suitable for attempts at autonomous flight: an MAV has to fly 8-figures around two fixed poles.

The team registration on the EMAV site http://www.emav2009.org/ is currently open.

CONFERENCE:

For the conference, we aim for the submission of papers that address novel, challenging and innovative ideas, concepts or systems. We particularly encourage papers that go beyond MAV hardware, and address issues such as the collaboration of multiple MAVs, applications of computer vision, and non-GPS based navigation.

Suggested topics include, but are not limited to, the following areas:

- aerodynamics of MAVs
- sense and avoid
- enhanced MAV autonomy
- flapping MAVs
- small-sized MAVs
- MAV swarms
- applications of MAVs
- new MAV concepts
- artificial intelligence in MAVs
- computer vision for MAVs
- control system theory and MAVs
- indoor MAV navigation
- outdoor MAV navigation without GPS
- new MAV materials

The best papers will be eligible for an expedited review at the International Journal for Micro Aerial Vehicles (IJMAV).
