gcc-linaro (with newlib) and binutils now install correctly
the previous newlib and gcc-linaro-boot ports are now obsolete.

have started work on the gdb and openocd port files but haven't tested them yet.

gdb now builds and installs correctly. opneocd is still a work in progress. It 
fails in the configure stage.
