Digital Fusion has the ability to map most of the extra channel to any other 
channel. In other words you could map the x,y,z normal channels to r,g,b etc. 
It handles z naturally and even that can be mapped to another channel. You can 
use any of these channels as a mask or matte as well. In short it rocks! You 
can get info and a demo version of this node based compositor at 
www.eyeonline.com

I can't answer the Lightwave questions, but Shake is intrinsically
limited to RGBAZ, and if you're using the Shake/OpenEXR plugin from the
OpenEXR site then I think it will only recognise the RGBA channels in
the file anyway.
