Thats how I undestand if from the docs, never did it myself yet though.
Yes, that's precisely it. Layers are defined by the channel names, specifically
the dot based syntax.
Some reading applications show them as layers for the user to pick, some just
use the plain channel names (and a few don't allow the user to do anything).
