Hi Jim,

currently there is no file format specification that is independent
of the OpenEXR library; the format is defined as being what the library
produces. (Some of the code in the IlmImfTest directory is intended
to give us confidence that we do not accidentally change the file format
when we change the library.)

At some point we will probably produce a byte-for-byte specification of
the file format, to allow OpenEXR implementations that are independent
of the IlmImf library, but before we do that, we have to be sure that
the format is very unlikely to change in the future. The EXR file format
has been used internally here at ILM for about two years, and it has been
rather stable, but the public release of OpenEXR happened less than a week
ago; comments from users over the next couple of weeks may convince us to
change the format slightly (as long as compatibility can be maintained).

Florian
