with some style edits:
* parentheses around if clauses here and there
* space after comma separating function & indexing arguments
...and I added an output arg tofigure() in L. 236 to be able to close the
figure handle before the error stmt. in L.278.

Maybe it's better to use numel() rather than length() when assessing vector
dimensions but I left them in place.
