Can you try building with --without-OSMesa?
The Ubuntu 14.04 libosmesa6* packages have some problems, see
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1551028, I would recommend avoiding it
completely. The manual figures will be built with gnuplot as a fallback.
