I am finally getting back to trying to troubleshoot this segmentation fault
with MXE-Octave under windows. Using Philip's info, I was able to compile
Octave 3.8.2-rc1 and confirm that the segfault occurs still occurs.

If you run Octave-cli from a command window and execute the script

test imread;
exit(0);

you get
0x68A80B80 (0x0022F970 0x05AD0490 0x0022FFC4 0x770C8CD5), _ZN5ArrayIdED2Ev()

x10 bytes(s)
panic: Segmentation violation -- stopping myself...
attempting to save variables to 'octave-workspace'...
