John It seems that when you try to run the mingw gdb debugger that some of the files are not available to the debugger (for instance array.h) so I was unable to step through it to fine out which constructor was involved. perhaps there is a way to identify from the back trace? I am still figuring things out as I learn more about Octave and Linux but glad to help in any way I can.
