I just noticed: did you mean disable at compile-time or not make it default
at octave startup? It certainly should be available, and I am OK with it
being
the default at startup if others like that.

I'm OK with having it enabled by default.

I think that given the current state of the GUI, people will enable it by default for binary distributions no matter what we do in the source distribution.
