I was in favor of this version.  It would produce ticklabels like:

1e-10  1e-08  1e+00 1e+02 1e+10  as examples.  All labels would
be the same width (in fixed width font).  But, if anyone has a strong
preference for something more like what Ben has coded already, that
is OK with me.
