This is getting beyond my tex skills, but if the width of the \infty symbol 
could be narrowed 
slightly (how do you adjust the width (independent of height) of a math symbol 
(or a non math mode 
letter for that matter)?), then a white box placed where you suggest, it may be 
readable enough to 
evoke both the OC and the \infty. 

For the "E", could we put a image of the capital script E from jwe's signature 
as a small 
acknowledgment?
