It seems the behavior has gone away. (And the PKG_ADD file is present as John said needs to be.) I'm not sure really what the problem was. However, I just noticed that in a terminal where I had launched the version of Octave that remained after uninstall, exiting and running Octave still stays at that previous version. So it would seem that a new terminal needs to be launched after install Octave. That's probably where my mistake was. Dan
