Second, I'd like to update the projects page
(http://www.gnu.org/software/octave/projects.html). This was
autogenerated from projects.texi apparently, so the place to start
with this would be finding then cleaning up projects.texi. If it does
not exist (I couldn't find it by searching the CVS of the website or
the source), then I'd like to start to clean up what's there and
update it.
The PROJECTS file is part of all octave distributes and is in the root
directory. There are a large number of things that should probably be
dropped from the file though, either since they are resolve or perhaps
no longer relevant.

I wonder if the projects page shouldn't also be part of a wiki, so it
can be readily updated by the various individuals involved in the
projects. I've been thinking that maybe the best solution is tighter
integration between the top level octave pages and the wiki, where a few
top-level web pages are static html, but some of the links go to pages
on the wiki, which a similar look and feel. For example, the official
web site for the Fedora linux distribution, fedoraproject.org is
entirely maintained as a wiki. Users are required to sign on with a
username and password to edit it. This would require some coordination
and some changes in how the wiki is currently managed, but in the long
run, this would hopefully make it possible to make the information more
up to date.
I believe the PROJECTS file should be split-up and placed in an issue
tracking system rather than be part of a webpage. If the CVS ever
migrates to SVN then something like tracs should probably be installed
to handle this. In fact I think tracs has a wiki interface as well..
